Sixty Seconds with Judi

Don’t be afraid, I am not trying to channel my inner Rastafarian. I am just so excited that strawberry season is finally here and it’s time for me to start making jam!  I think Strawberry jam may be my favorite. I don’t know if it’s because they are the first fruits that I get to preserve or if it really is my favorite fruit over all. Of course that all changes when the blueberries are in season, and then blackberries, then peaches, and then… I love them all, but  strawberries have their perfect little red, juicy sweetness and they are a great way to start off the season.

I have been making jams and jellies since I was a little girl. My mom grew grapes and strawberries in our little suburban yard and we would work for days putting up dozens of jars of sweet jams for our family. I have carried on the tradition in my own home. I do not grow my own fruit; I have the luxury of working on farm that does that for me, however, I still put up dozens of jams for my family and friends. It has become such a ritual that my friends conveniently return their jars about this time every year in hopes of getting refills.

On June 2nd, this upcoming Saturday, we will be celebrating the Strawberry Festival!  I will be in front of the Farm Market sharing the secrets to preserving that delicious strawberry flavor all season long. We will be jamming 10am-2pm. Come learn how to turn your strawberries into delicious jam to delight your family and friends. But, just in case you don’t want to make your own, mine will be available for sale.
