What do I do with those Kids?

Sixty Seconds with Judi

Yes, summer has arrived! The kids are out of school and now it’s up to you to become their social organizer, their camp councilor and their cruise director! Sometimes this can feel like a part time job, not to mention the expense of it all.

When my children were younger, I would try to organize a few outings each week to keep them busy and help break up the summer. It made my life much easier and much more fun for all of us. However, trying to find inexpensive things became a bit of a challenge. It required some research and a little planning. Let me share some of my favorite outings and maybe it will help you!

One of my favorite things to do with my children was taking part in Delaware County Passport to History. You don’t have to be from Delaware County to enjoy all the rich history in this area. The passport, which can be obtained from any Delaware County municipal building, will take you to many different historical locations where you get your passport stamped and learn about your local and national history. Did you know Linvilla Orchards is one of the many historical landmarks in the Passport to History program? Check out their website for more information at http://www.padelcohistory.org/education.

Speaking of Linvilla… Did you know Linvilla is starting a Summer Science and Nature Series? We have to help the kids’ minds stay active during their summer break.  Starting with a Solar Printing class on Wednesday, July 12th and again with a class on Owls and what they eat on Wednesday, July 26th. Each hour and a half hands on class will fill your child with the wonders of Nature and Science.

Don’t forget about our regularly scheduled classes. For instance, every Tuesday at 10am we have our Story Time and Craft with Miss Marcia! This is a favorite among preschoolers and their families.

Add Gardening with Children to your calendar on July 8th when Miss Marcia talks about worms and July 15th when Cowgirls Doreen and Molly introduce you to our Baby Cows! Check out our Calendar at Linvilla.com for other great classes and events.

When looking for fun things to do with the kids keep in mind that we offer Pick Your Own.  Avoid the weekend crowd and come on out in the middle of the week and pick some fruits and vegetables. Try your hand at making jam or canning. Teach your children where their food comes from.

Fishing at Orchard Lake is always fun! Here at Linvilla, licenses are not required. So this is a great way to see if you have any future fisherman in your life without having to purchase all the gear.

Don’t forget about your local libraries. They always have great programs for your children in the summer. It doesn’t hurt that they might come home with a book too!  If books aren’t the route you want to go, our local AMC at Granite Run has $4 movies on Monday mornings. These are a nice way for you to get an hour of peace in an air-conditioned room.

No matter what you do this summer, have fun, relax and spend some quality time with those little ones. They just grow up so fast!
