Memories of Mom

Sixty Seconds with Judi

As I watch the lilacs bloom in my front yard, I am reminded of my mother. Lilacs were her favorite flower and with Mother’s Day coming up she is on my mind even more than usual.

I am very fortunate to have always been surrounded by strong, hard-working women who loved to be outside in the fresh air working in the sunshine and dirt, growing beautiful flowers and food for their families. Some of my happiest memories were working in the garden with my mom. When she passed away I walked through her yard finding some of the special things she had planted.  I dug up a favorite peony and several large purple irises. I brought those plants home to my garden and planted them. Now I have little memories of my mom all over my yard.

I loved this idea so much that my husband dug up a piece of my mother-in-law’s lilac bush and planted it out front for me along with a beloved piece of azalea that now blooms inside my gate. It feels good knowing that these women are always honored in my yard and little pieces of their beauty and hard work are blooming year after year in my own little gardens.

This week honor your mom with a beautiful shrub or perennial that will last for years to come. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
